ConstructionHimeji castle is second in size only to Osaka, and is an impressive build. Being a military stronghold, a center for political life, and a historical monument, the construction of this historic site is very important. Though it was never used in battle and has stayed in much the same shape for 300 years, it was nearly impossible to get into.
The castle included one main donjon (keep) and 3 secondary ones. The main compound is located on a 45 meter hill, which, along with the west compound, is surrounded by 3 rings of outer compounds. The primary donjon is very impressive, with a 5 story height on the outside, and a 7 story height inside.
Fun fact: in the southeast courtyard, there was an area called the Hakiri-Maru which was a place for Samurai to commit ritual suicide, otherwise known as seppuku. |
