The current main tower of Osaka is in its third generation. This is the counterpoint of the castle that is a great invention that was lavishly decorated. Completed in 1585, Hideyoshi would invite lords to view this masterpiece and the treasures inside. However, after this great unifier died, the Tokugawa troops attacked the castle during the Summer War of Osaka, and was rebuilt by Tokugawa Hidetada in the 1620s, making the main tower in its second generation. To make it become its third generation, the tower, in 1665, was struck by lightning and burned town. This rebuild was not complete until 1931, but is now fully in generation three. “It is currently made of steel-framed concrete and was recognized as a valued modern caste and was designated as a Register Tangible Cultural Property by the national government”("Osaka Castle"). The tower has over 10,000 artifacts and materials from the Azuchi-Momoyama period, a time of great Japanese success. This collection is the largest and most prized in all of Japan.
